So, fruit…. It’s loaded with vitamins, fibre and antioxidants and is great for your body. Everybody knows that. What everybody doesn’t know is that you’re going to receive those benefits 10x more if you eat it for breakfast. So here are 4 facts about fruit which will make you reconsider your most important meal of the day.

  1. Fruits should be eaten on their own, on an empty stomach– Fruit doesn’t mix well with other food types. When you eat fruit on its own, on an empty stomach, you give your body time to digest the food properly leading to full absorption of the vitamins and nutrients. When you eat fruit on a full stomach or with a different food type, it will not be exposed to the correct digestive enzymes; it will not reach the intestines when it needs to and will likely just rot and ferment in the stomach and instead lead to inflammation and flatulence. To prevent this from happening, eat fruit for breakfast, when the stomach is at it’s emptiest and you know you will reap the benefits.
  2. Fruits are natural detoxifiers and between 7am-11am your body is in detoxification mode– We need to be mindful about the importance of detoxification to the body. Eating starchy, fatty, hard to digest food is only going to counteract this process and leave your body filled with toxins that need to be released. This is why fruit is the perfect breakfast, working in sync with the body; it gets rid of the nasties and leaves you feeling healthy and energised.
  3. Fruits will help your brain to function – Which is another reason why they are the perfect way to break your fast. The brain runs off glucose. Glucose is in the natural sugars of fruit. It will wake up the mind and allow it to remain focussed. This can be achieved without ingesting harsh animal products, fats or using stimulants such as coffee.
  4. Fruit will get rid of your bloat and leave you feeling full and satisfied – The fibre in fruit will push out waste from the digestive tract and get rid of lower belly bloating. Fruit is full of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that tell the brain it’s satisfied and to shut off the hunger signal to the stomach.

There you have 4 facts to make you more fruitwise! Happy Breakfasting!
